Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What exactly is this thing?
A: Haunted Poe is an interactive and immersive theatre production that takes the form of a haunted house as its defining concept. In other words, instead of sitting in a seat and watching a show, you will walk through the space (a 10,000 square foot warehouse) and performances will happen all around you.

Is it scary?
We're going more for a sustained spooky vibe than outright terror. That being said, the show is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, considered by many to be the father of the horror story (as well as science fiction and detective stories). Haunted Poe takes many of the author's best-known and most chilling works and distills them into dramatic moments intended to surprise, scare, disturb and haunt you.

What kinds of scares are there?
Here's what you will NOT find in Haunted Poe: flesh-eating zombies, chainsaw-wielding maniacs, ooze-dripping aliens and toxic-waste mutants. Poe wasn’t into any of that – just good, old-fashioned stuff like insanity, axe-murder, animal mutilation and being buried alive. (And that’s just one story: “The Black Cat”) Unlike many haunted houses, our show has dialogue, performed by professional actors trained to deliver a complex psychological experience instead of the usual “undead-jumping-out-and-saying-boo” kind of scare.

Can I bring my kids?
As mentioned above, Poe has written some scary and disturbing stuff. However, his work is read in almost every high school in the country. Kids love Poe—he’s a crazy dude! This production is intended to have literary as well as shock value. You may learn a thing or two about Poe while we’re scaring the pants off you! Bottom line: we recommend parental guidance for children 12 and under.

I’m gonna get drunk before the show cuz that’s the best way to see a haunted house!!!
Is that a question? Are you drunk now? We will have security personnel on-hand to assist you out the door. If you appear under the influence of any substance, or are unruly, or touch the actors, you will be promptly dismissed without a refund.

So, no touching?
No. No touching. You will be very close to the action at all times, and there are moments in the show where the characters will interact with the audience. Although brief contact may be made, the actors will not grab or hit you. We expect the same from you.

How long will the show last?
HAUNTED POE has 13 main rooms and passageways, with scenes that last approximately 4 minutes each. All told, the experience will last approximately 40-50 minutes. There’s also a large room with informational kiosks about Poe’s writing and history, and refreshments and souvenirs. So you might be inside for an hour or more, depending on your interest.

When is it playing?
We have 22 scheduled dates from Thursday, October 1 – Sunday, November 1. Click HERE for Events and Tickets.

How do I get tickets?
The only way to guarantee admission is to buy ahead of time, online. Click HERE to get started. HAUNTED POE is story-based with a focus on small-group interaction; we are not trying to push as many people as possible through our show. Therefore audience capacity is limited and advance purchase of tickets is highly recommended.

Will I have to wait a long time in line?
Not if you buy your ticket ahead of time. Tickets are sold in thirty-minute increments. For instance, if you buy a ticket for the 8:30PM time slot, you will enter the house between 8:30PM and 9:00PM. Please arrive before your scheduled entrance time so you're ready to go!

Can I just show up?
Depending on availability, tickets may also be purchased at the door. If slots remain, you will be admitted on a first come, first served basis.

Can my group get a special ticket price?
Yes! Groups of 12 or more, please click the show date on the CALENDAR to get started. When you are directed to Brown Paper Tickets, an order line for group sales will appear if more than 12 tix remain in that time slot. Group tix are $5 off the regular price for that performance. Visa, Mastercard and Discover are accepted.

Where are you located?
The show takes place indoors, rain or shine, in a 10,000 square foot warehouse at 38 Jackson Street, in South Philadelphia (MAP). Although this is an industrial part of town, there are numerous “big box” stores nearby like Target, Lowe’s and Best Buy, and we are located next to Jomar Discount Clothing Warehouse.

How do I get there?
Driving is easiest. For general directions, click HERE, or use your GPS and type in 38 Jackson Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19148.

Free parking is available under the I-95 overpass 1/2 block west of the venue.

What’s the easiest way to get there using public transit?
Take the Broad Street subway line to the Snyder Avenue stop. Exit the subway and locate the Septa Route 79 bus stop at Snyder & Broad, on the south side (eastbound) of the street. Take the bus across town and request a stop at Water Street. Walk one block south on Water St. to Jackson, turn left and you’re there!

Is this handicapped accessible?
Sadly, it is not. Access to the production is up two flights of stairs, with no elevator. Inside the production there are a few stairs, and numerous passageways and unusual twists and turns that preclude full accessibility.

Are there any other limitations that I should be aware of before I buy a ticket?
Yes. This production is not recommended for people with back or heart problems, pregnant women, those prone to seizures, anyone with an affliction exacerbated by anxiety or fear, or those with mobility problems. You should also know that a fog machine and strobe lights may be used, and it’s relatively dark throughout. The atmosphere and theatrics contribute to an eerie experience! Finally, management has the right to refuse entrance to persons who touch the actors, are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or who are unruly or violent. No refunds or exchanges will be given.

I bought a ticket in advance, but can’t make it. May I get a refund or switch my ticket to a different time or different day?
Sorry. There are no refunds or exchanges.

Anything else I should know?
Yes. Haunted Poe is an interactive experience. Wear sensible shoes: you will be walking through a series of rooms and hallways, there are stairs, possibly uneven footing and varying ceiling heights in some areas. There is no coat check.

How many people can go on a tour together?
We have a "Rule of 13." Groups are welcome and we will do our best to put everyone through consecutively.

Is there a place to buy stuff like T-shirts, posters, food and drink?
Yes! We will have souvenirs and refreshments available in the lobby when you exit the show.

Can I use my credit card at the box office?

Is there an ATM at the venue?

Are there restrooms?
We will have a porta-pottie but everyone knows how fun those are—so plan accordingly.
